Denis O’Brien – GS1

  • Denis O’Brien joined GS1 in Spring 2012, bringing with him a wealth of industry experience in IT systems, traceability solutions and GS1 Standards implementation. Denis has immense expertise in the use of GS1 standards to enable supply chain visibility and business automation and has worked alongside GS1 for over 15 years.

    Denis was the key developer of the Kepak-Musgrave Beef Traceability System in 2005. In his role as Director of Standards and Solutions Denis heads upGS1 Ireland’s professional services team, leading the design, specification and implementation of GS1 standards-based solutions for both private and public sector organisations across many industry sectors including retail, food manufacturing, healthcare and transport & logistics.

    Topic: “Traceability in the Food Supply Chain: Current Thinking and Future Trends”

    Denis O Brien’s presentation will outline the current requirements of a good traceability system (and some examples of why traceability is required). Denis will give a brief overview of the various approaches to traceability ranging from existing, low-tech product identification and the traditional, humble barcode to the latest identification and anti-counterfeiting technologies such as e-Pedigree, RFID and the EPCIS (the Electronic Product Code Information System). Denis will also be touching on the latest emerging technologies such as 3D & Holographic barcodes, and data encrypted barcodes.
